(Un)certain future for ‘De Regenboog’

by Kirsty van Tilborg, Sarah Guern and Kirsten Spooren

AMSTERDAM - The homeless shelter ‘De Regenboog’ in Amsterdam is coping with the cutbacks from the Dutch government, because of the recession. ‘De Regenboog’ is getting more and more insecure about the subsidy cuts.

Because of the governmental cutbacks, some homeless shelters already had to close their doors. The care of the homeless is now in the hands of the community. The community gets money from the state, depending on how much homeless people there are in a town. The community gives a budget to the homeless shelters. With that budget, homeless shelters have to take care of more than one hundred people a day. “With the budget we get from the community, we have to spend the money well,” says Jonnie Pereboom, manager of the homeless day shelter ‘De Regenboog’.

“Sometimes we have 215 visitors, for whom we have to provide food. We are like a café where you can drink coffee, it’s a social environment. Homeless shelters are necessary to bring the homeless back into that social environment,” says Jonnie. Not everyone is allowed to come and ‘drink coffee’ at the shelter. Before people can join the community, the organizers of ‘De Regenboog’ will have a small interview with them to find out who they are and where they come from.  Based on this interview they can determine whether they would fit their social group. ”Because of the governmental cutbacks, we have a strict policy of who may join us. We don’t know a lot about what will happen in the future. Will we still get money from the government?”

It costs almost 50.000 euros per year to maintain one homeless person. The government thinks this can be less and some communities have to cut back 800.000 euro in the care of homeless shelters. Some shelters had to stop there overnight shelters. And who knows when it will happen with ‘De Regenboog’.

Interview – Samir Gamil

One year after Egyptian revolution
By Kirsty van Tilborg

Around one year ago started the demonstrations against Moebarak in Egypt. Now Moebarak isn’t in power anymore and a lot of things changed for the civilians of Egypt. Samir Gamil, a 27-year-old Egyptian woman, tells about the revolution and what it brought to the Egyptians, one year after.

According to Samir the revolution brought positive and negative things. The most positive thing for Egypt and its civilians is the possibility to vote. Before the revolution the Egyptians felt very unimportant. They could vote, but it wouldn’t matter because the government would pick the same president. Now everyone has one vote. The only problem is the role of the parliament. Samir: ‘The parliament now is trying to do a good job, but they don’t try it very hard. So that is why we trying to remove the elections till 10 March in case of the end of June, so that we can choose for another parliament.’

But there are more things changed, like in the structure of the companies. ‘There was a lot of corruption in the big companies. Even more corrupt than we all thought it was. So after the revolution a lot of heads were asked to move.’ But there is also a negative thing after the revolution. ‘Everyone is asking for their rights and their duties. There is a problem with managing and ruling the rights of everyone. Hopefully everything will be clear when the new parliament is selected.’

A lot of things changed for Egypt, but for Samir herself not a lot. Although the revolution made Samir lost her foolish and it brought her an important thing. ‘The system makes you selfish. I didn’t follow anything what happened in the political or economic live. The best thing that happened for me after the revolution was that I became interested about what happened in Egypt.’

Editorial

Printed vs Online media
By Kirsty van Tilborg

It’s really popular at the moment; reading books, magazines and newspapers online. You can read more and more content online and according to some people, printed media will no longer exist in the future.

Reading online is very handy, because you can read what you want, whenever you want. And mostly it’s even cheaper than buying a ‘real’ magazine or book. Another positive thing about online media is that you don’t have to wear heavy bags anymore. You don’t have to bring all your magazines, newspapers and books you want to read, but just one cellphone, laptop or tablet with internet.

However I think that online media takes all the magic away of reading. The smell of new books, the search for books at the library and the joy when your postman brings your favorite magazine. But also reading in bath, at the beach or at the swimming pool would be very annoying without printed media. Think about it. You’re lying in bath, reading a book on your tablet and suddenly it falls in the water. When you do that with a ‘normal’ book or magazine, nothing happened. It crease a little, but you can still read. But if this happens with your tablet, you can throw it away.

Online media. Very handy for some people, who don’t like the smell of new books and don’t read magazines in bath. But for me, I’ll stick with the normal way of reading. Just with a creased piece of paper in my hands.

New way of listening music
iPod Touch, from monday in stores

Tilburg, 12 February 2012 – On Monday 13 February goes the newest version of the iPod in sale: the iPod Touch.

Apple goes in a new direction with the new iPod. The iPod Touch has a lot of new functions instead of the original iPod. Where the original iPod only had the possibilities to listening music and watching videos and photos, has the iPod touch a lot of extra features. The iPod touch has an internet connection, a camera and the possibility to download apps.

The iPod touch has the possibility to get connected with the internet, through a wireless Wi-Fi connection. After this, you can download a lot of different (free) apps. There is a huge range of apps. There are a lot of different games, from puzzle games to arcade games. But off course there is still the possibility to download music, videos and e-books.

Apple is very happy with this new version of the iPod. ‘We are very proud of the introduction of the iPod Touch. It will give a new dimension to listening music. Also it is the latest thing where Steve Jobs worked about, so that makes it more special for us.’

There are two versions of the iPod Touch. The 8-GB version costs 299 Euros and the 16-GB version costs 339 Euros. From Monday the iPods are for sale at the Free Record Shop, Mediamarkt and Saturn. Most of these stores will open at midnight. For more information you can go to www.apple.com.

News article: Royal ship sank, only one survivor

Royal ship sank, only one survivor
By Kirsty van Tilborg

Fairyland – Last night the royal ship sank at the big ocean and 22 crew members died. Only one person survived, Prince Eric.

Shipwreck
The royal ship navigated in the big ocean, a few hours from Fairyland. The ship would arrive the next day, but the weather changed. It began storming and the waves became bigger and bigger. The ship got caught by a wave and sank to the bottom of the ocean. Almost all of the passengers died, except for Prince Eric. He was found at the beach this morning. The prince does well, he only has a few bruises.

Alarmed phone call
The last signal from the ship came around eleven o’clock, the king got an alarmed phone call from the captain of the royal ship. King Arthur: “The captain told me that they were in trouble, he said that there were a lot of high waves. The phone got disconnected and after that, nobody heard something about them.” In the morning the storm got down, so the police started to look for the ship. They found out that it sank and they were sure that no one could survive a disaster like this.

Beautiful voice
But a miracle happened, Prince Eric survived the shipwreck. The prince said: “I barely can’t remember what happened. I can only remember the beautiful voice of a girl, I think she saved my life.” Peter Pan, a water expert, says that it’s impossible that someone saved the prince from the wild water. “The ship was a few hours away from Fairyland and nobody can swim that far, especially when the water is so cold.” Probably we will never know what really happened.
